English Romantic Painter, 1769-1859 English painter and engraver. He was the most important animal painter of his generation. Many of his dynamic compositions depict horses, dogs or wild animals in agitated emotional states, the sense of movement being reinforced by vigorous brushwork and strong colours. With their sweeping landscapes and dramatic skies, his canvases epitomize Romanticism. His known artistic activity dates only from 1602 to 1616 and he is now familiar chiefly for his etchings and drawings, all his decorative works and most of his paintings having perished. His highly idiosyncratic style was inspired by such Italian artists as Parmigianino, by the School of Fontainebleau and by northern artists including Albrecht Derer and Bartholomeus Spranger. His work would seem to express a private and nervous religious sensibility through a style of the greatest refinement.

Onderdonk, Julian
American, 1882-1922 was a Texan Impressionist painter, often called "the father of Texas painting." He attended West Texas Military Academy and was graduated in 1900. Julian Onderdonk was born in San Antonio, TX to Robert Jenkins Onderdonk (a painter) and Emily Gould Onderdonk. He was raised in South Texas and was an enthusiastic sketcher and painter. At 19, with the help of a generous neighbor, Julian left Texas in order to study with the renowned American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. Julian's father, Robert, has also once studied with Chase. Julian spent the summer of 1901 on Long Island at Chase's Shinnecock School of Art. He studied with Chases for a couple of years and then moved to New York to attempt to make a living as an eu plain aire artist. While in New York he met and married Gertrude Shipman and they soon had a son.
